Stephen Ruth


Lt Col Stephen G. Ruth is the 26th Commandant of the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point. His previous assignment was as a Strategist for the Office of Security Cooperation in Baghdad, Iraq. In this role, he prepared talking points for senior leader meetings with Prime Minister Al-Maliki and the US Ambassador to Iraq. Additionally, Lt Col Ruth was instrumental in the transition of US Forces – Iraq (USF-I) to the Department of State at the end of OPN New Dawn.
Some of his previous assignments were Transition Team Commander for 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st CAV Division in Iraq, responsible training Iraqi Forces (2011); U.S. Exchange Officer in England, responsible for the British Overseas Training Program (2010); and Senior Operations Officer for Task Force 2-2 Infantry in Kandahar, Afghanistan, responsible for counter-insurgency and economic development (2009).
Prior to the Global War on Terror, Lt Col Ruth was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany and deployed to the Balkans in support of the United Nations in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and in support of NATO in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Lt Col Ruth holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Texas A&M University and a Master’s of Organizational Psychology and Leadership from George Mason University. Upon completion of his Master’s, Lt Col Ruth served as an Instructor and later Assistant Professor of Leadership at West Point. He has conducted lectures on leadership at Beijing International MBA School, Peking University and the International Leadership Association (ILA) Conference in Washington DC. He serves on the TAMU International Board and is an active mentor for the Academy for Future International Leaders (AFIL).
In May 2010, student leaders at A&M chose him as the university’s 2010 campus Muster speaker, an honor shared with former Defense Secretary Robert Gates in 2009 and Governor Rick Perry in 2002.
Lt Col Stephen G. Ruth has been honored for his contributions to the Armed Services as seen by his many decorations which include 2 Bronze Star Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 5 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Joint Meritorious Unit Awards, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Afghan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, the Air Assault Badge, Airborne Wings, and the Ranger Tab. Foreign Awards include the German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge-Gold and the British Airborne Wings.
LTC Ruth is married to Bettina and they have three children: Stephen II, Sahara, and Sterling Ruth.
